This website — and my life
are undergoing major revisions. Please excuse the incompleteness and do

21st Century Renaissance Woman
In elementary school I
learned about Renaissance men who were skilled in multiple artistic and
technical fields. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I said
with no hesitation, “I want to be a Renaissance woman!” My Social Studies teacher
was not happy with this answer. We argued about what she claimed were “facts:”
first, that the Renaissance was already over and
would not return. Second, that there was no such thing as a Renaissance
woman — only men could fill this role. I don’t remember if she punished me,
turned around and ignored me for the rest of our time together, or if we
agreed to disagree. In any case, I believe that day set me on a conscious
path of gathering skills and “tools” from a wide variety of interesting
academic and professional disciplines.
Later, a favorite
English teacher pointed out that the best writers and artists create
their works of art from a lifetime of personal experiences, and an unexpected music mentor encouraged me to
study as many writers, singers and artists
and their works as possible.
My family history
influenced me tremendously. I felt
challenged to live up to the exciting, interesting and romantic lives that
my grandmother and parents described. I also felt compelled to strive for
the respect of my multi-talented siblings, whom I have always so admired.
Hopefully, this explains
briefly why this site (and my life) is overflowing with such a variety of
different topics. At this time I am working to list some of the highlights of fields where I have spent the majority of my time. Eventually
I will provide more detailed descriptions of what these efforts have meant to my lifetime of work and play.
